How to qualify for supplemental security income

People with disabilities in Pennsylvania who are unable to hold gainful employment may qualify for assistance through the Supplemental Security Income program. For those over the age of 65, qualifying may not be very difficult even if their disability isn't debilitating. For those under 65, however, a person must demonstrate that they have a disability that prevents them from working and that they have no other means of gaining financial assistance.

Qualifying for SSI

Pennsylvania residents who are elderly or living with disabilities sometimes struggle financially. For those who have very low incomes and few or no assets, the Supplemental Security Income program, also known as SSI, provides monthly cash payments that can help recipients meet their expenses. Those who receive SSI benefits may also automatically qualify for other social assistance programs.

How SSI differs from SSDI

If a Pennsylvania resident becomes disabled, there are two different types of insurance programs that may be available. One is Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), and the other is Supplemental Security Income (SSI). While both provide financial support for those who can't work for medical reasons, they have different purposes.
